INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEANUP DAY-2021

1. Introduction.  Towards ongoing efforts of Government for the “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” and ‘Swachh Sagar Abhiyan’ in lines with vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister’s appeal for mass cleanliness and sanitation campaign, through “Swachhta Hi Seva conducted ICC-2021 in all Coastal States/Union Territories on 18 Sep 21. The International Coastal Cleanup day is conducted in various parts of the world in third week of September every year under the aegis of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP) in the South Asian Region. The Indian Coast Guard has been coordinating this activity in India since 2006

2. Participation.   Indian Coast Guard, as a part of International Coastal Cleanup Day conducted focused activities contributing towards “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan”. The event was conducted within an aim to educate and motivate the local populace for maintaining the sea shores neat and clean and to avoid further pollution of marine environment by man made activities. This year, Gujarathas witnessed the highest participation of 2077 volunteers followed by Andhra Pradesh which had 901 volunteers. Nationwide, a total of 7,184 volunteers participated in the ICC-2021 campaign. As a part of contributing towards ‘Swachh Sagar Abhiyan’ ICG ships participated in cleaning of marine litters from coastal waters.

3. Debris Collection.  The campaign resulted in the collection of 38,008 Kgs (approx) of marine litter. Debris collection was highest at Maharashtra with approx 12,814 Kgs and Tamil Nadu was approx 9,686 Kgs.

4. Civil support.  Apart from other armed forces, ICC-2021 received good support from various civil authorities, Municipal Corporations, NGO, fisheries associations, School students, College students, NCC cadets, IOC Marine Police, Oil handling agencies volunteers including Primary Health Centre (PHM) participated in the event.
