Additional Director General VSR Murthy joined the Indian Coast Guard on 18 Jan 1984. A gold medalist of the Andhra University, the Officer holds Masters Degrees in Marine Sciences from Andhra University and Defence & Strategic Studies from Madras University. The Officer also holds Master of Philosophy and a Master of Business Administration in Human Resource Management from the Indira Gandhi National Open University.
Topper of the Coast Guard’s fifth batch of Officers, Additional Director General Murthy has held several key command and staff appointments, both afloat and ashore. His command, with distinction, of all four major ship classes of the Indian Coast Guard includes the Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessel Samar (Best Coast Guard Unit), Offshore Patrol Vessel Vijaya (Best Search & Rescue Ship), Fast Patrol Vessel Annie Besant and Inshore Patrol Vessel Kittur Chennamma (Best Taut Ship). The Flag Officer’s important command appointments ashore include the Commander Coast Guard District No. 5 (Tamil Nadu), Commander Coast Guard District No. 11 (Goa) and Commanding Officer, ICGS Delhi. His key staff assignments include Principal Director (Policy & Plans) and Joint Director (Human Resource Development) at the Coast Guard Headquarters and Chief Staff Officer (Personnel & Administration) at the Coast Guard Regional Headquarters (West), Mumbai.
On elevation to the Flag rank as Inspector General in Aug 2009, the Officer spearheaded the Operations Division at the Coast Guard Headquarters as the Deputy Director General (Operations & Coastal Security) till Jan 2012. He was the Coast Guard Commander of the Andaman & Nicobar Region from Feb 2012 to May 2014 and thereafter the North East Region from May 2014 to Apr 2015 and Deputy Director General (Operations & Coastal Security) at the Coast Guard Headquarters for the second time from May 2015 to Aug 16. The Flag Officer assumed the duties as Additional Director General Indian Coast Guard, on promotion w.e.f. 12 Aug 16.
The Flag Officer is an alumnus of the National Defence College, New Delhi and Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. He has received specialised training in Search & Rescue and Port Operations at the US Coast Guard Reserve Training Centre, Yorktown.
Additional Director General VSR Murthy is a highly decorated Officer. He is a recipient of President Tatrakshak Medal (Distinguished Service) in 2012, Tatrakshak Medal (Gallantry) in 2003 and the Lieutenant Governor (A&N Islands) Commendation in 1989. The Officer was awarded the Director General Coast Guard Commendation twice in 1988 and 2006.
Additional Director General VSR Murthy maintains a keen interest in photography and gardening.
The Flag Officer is married to Smt. Jyoti since 1988, and they have a son Master Nikhil Kumar.
